A little Introduction
A series of gory attacks in the area surrounding a remote biotech lab brings you in S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics And Rescue Squad) to investigate. On arrival, Bravo team communications are abruptly cut off.
Now it's up to your team. You arrive at the isolated mansion under-powered and on the run. Arm yourself with anything you can find: knives, pistols, shotguns, flame-throwers, ...
Search for hidden rounds to stay alive! There are puzzles to solve, traps to disarm and mysteries to uncover while
trying to avoid a blood-bath with the freaks of nature that populate the mansion.
Each lurking horror you survive will bring you closer to the source of the Resident Evil.
The Manual
Resident Evil's manual is pretty basic. Reminded me of the time when I was playing console games. Those manuals were also fast-made. And since this game is a port from the Playstation, the manual couldn't be huge. However, Capcom did manage to release someting better in manual design then their console games. Special font is used to give the game more a horror-look. There aren't any pictures in this manual from its characters or weapons.
Don't look for any explanation of buttons or commands that are used in RE because they are just not here!.
A console game that has been ported to the PC and so is its manual.
Capcom ... doing it again?
Since 3D-acceleration has set a major (r)evolution in gaming world there are many game-companys that ported their biggest hits from consoles into the PC platforms. Why not? Fine by me because there are some pretty good games out there that otherwise just wouldn't be ported at all to the highly advanced PC.
One of these succesfull enough game-companys is Capcom Entertainment. Known as the founder of the original Streetfighter and all its clones, they decided that it would be time to transform one of their biggest hits on the Sony Playstation, which is Resident Evil, to the PC using the (new) 3D-technology.
Smile, YOUR on Death-cam!
The first time you install RE, it will ask you what kind of 3D-card you have in your system. This screen should pop up at that time but it didn't with me. After pressing some keys (don't ask me which ones) I managed to get that pop-up screen. Selecting the 'Diamond Monster 3D', the program did its job and continue its installing. Resident Evil's installation program lets you also choose what kind of installation type you want. A custom installation like this one is really what every game must have. You have absolutely everything in control on what the game should install or not. Personally, I installed around 287 MB which they also recommended. That huge amount of MegaBytes was responsable for installing the Scenery -, Room -, Music and Misc Data. However, you can also install nothing at all.
Indeed, RE will run on every system without installing anything . Well, THEY claim that. Don't forget those ini files. :-) Still, you all know that the more you install, the faster it will run.
The heros, Redfield and Valentine
Before you start playing, you first need to choose with which character you would like to play. There are only 2 choices. First of all we have Chris Redfield, a slacker pilot and sharpshooter. The second character is a demolition expert of the S.T.A.R.S, named Jill Valentine.
Actually, there are 2 different endings depending on what character you pick. Not only different endings but also the entire plot changes on your character. Not completely but enough to make a change. The game takes you through several nice cutscenes which gives you the feeling that you watch a movie rather then a game. These scenes take you to the point where the action takes place. The Mansion. It is all nice done and it is definitely a good choice of Capcom to include those in the game. This is quite nice especially when something is going to happen, the game takes over and adds more to the story by displaying a cutscene.
Resident Evil, not completely linear
Another nice feature that has been found in Resident Evil is that it's not a completely linear game. This means that you can solve and win in several different ways. Some items are absolutely required in solving puzzles, some are not. It is up to you to know what items are usefull. Sometimes this is critical because you can only carry a number of items. Other pick-ups need to be used with sense because they are not lying everywhere. You may need to move a chest, table, ladder or something else. If you haven't move it, you shall never know that there is an usefull item
which may help you in getting out alive of this mansion.
