System Shock 2
Page 3

It plays like a 3D Adventure with ...!

Once you get on your way with all these abilities it's time to get into the game properly. Apart from the RPG and management sections SS2 plays like a 3D Adventure with an occassional Action scene.
Onboard the Von Braun you will be presented by several tasks through your PDA, your Personal Digital Assistant. These will vary from repairing items to finding a power source to open a blast door.

However, all these things are not so easy as they sound. The ship seems to be infested with an unknown life form. Whether they are alien or not, is up to you to find out. But be warned, it will not be easy ! Not only because of the enemies but also because of the true-to-life nature of this game. Use a weapon a lot and it will break.
Got a broken item ? Then fix it ... if you got the skill and the right amount of nanites. Problems can always be solved in numerous ways, but it will be up to you to find the right way for your character. Will you blast your way through that room and take the risk of loosing all your ammo or will you use your hacking skill to crack the security system and use it against your foes ?

Trust me ... the adventure ahead is a long one.

Conclusion

Please remember that System Shock 2 is more than a 3D Shooter. If you don't have the patience to build on a character or to read through several in-game documents, then I'm afraid this is not the game for you.
Are you however looking for a diversion from the mindless Shoot-em-Up genre then you can't go wrong with SS2.

Instead of using the 'usual conclusion' I'm gonna give some more info on how I did my ratings for System Shock 2.

Manual and Documentation:
Nothing out of the ordinary for this type of game. A good layout and table of contents though and nicely presented background story and flavour text. Adequate is the right word here.

Gameplay:
This game oozes gameplay from every pore. The main responsible is the atmosphere and I guarantee you : you will be scared ... . However this style of gameplay will not be everyone's cup of tea and even for the veteran gameplayer it is a difficult game, even on the 'Easy' setting. Give it a chance and you will be hooked !

Graphics:
The graphics engine is a nothing very special, but it shows you a believable world. It is based on the Thief engine, so if you are familiar with that game you know what you can expect from the graphics.

Music and SoundFX:
Wow ! This is something special ! You will get scared by the sounds alone. You hear everyting : from escaping gas to an approaching robot around the corner. You will even have to rely on sound cues to detect surveillance cameras and booby-traps . Other development teams : Take note !!

So, what is my final rating?
System Shock 2 is a truely amazing game : you will be hooked from the beginning to the end. One word of advice though : don't play it before you go to bed :))
