Sudden Strike with latest patch Page 2
Three Campaigns and extra disc?
The game has three campaigns : Allied, German and Russin and a handful of one-off missions. The publisher even provided an extra mission disc. Isn't that great, a disc full of extra missions ? Well yes, but I wonder why they bothered to provide it on a separate CD. The file is only 4 Mb and adds 10+ extra missions.
Oh wait, there is a demo of European Wars on it too. Shame it's even worse than Sudden Strike but perhaps it's a very early demo. Yes, that would explain a lot, right?
Gameplay
Having choosen a campaign you are taken to the briefing screen. Here a narrator with the appropriate accent will provide you with all the information about your mission objectives. On many occassions however there are like more than 5 objectives in one mission. Developer 'Fireglow' must have a different definition of 'challenging' ! The problem here is that on the map where your objectives are shown there is not one single visual reference. Sure, there are animated arrows and little yellow crosses, but they don't tell me anything. Hmm.
Click OK and you're into the game. Hey, look sir ! Incoming enemy bombers, what should we do ? Bam Bam !! You just lost half of your squad after 0.1 second in the mission. Restart until they survive, ad nauseam. I just don't feel like I am in control of my men. Things are made way to complicated. Units don't react to their surroundings and sometimes they even ignore your commands.
There is no base building or resource gathering in this game. You'll just spend your time keeping your units together, setting up logistics to resupply your weapons, keeping your units together, finding a way around the map, keeping your units together, taking the wrong way, loosing your entire squad, restarting the mission as there is no in-game save feature. In other words, this game is definitely not living up towards its hype!! I find it rather not-amusing at all.
Conclusion
Well you already guessed that I didn't like this game at all. Sure, after seeing lots of screenshots, gameplay movies and other ads I expected only good things from CDV's Sudden Strike. Boy was I wrong. The graphics may be very clear, crisp and nice explosions, the infantery units are way too small! Sound is low quality all the way and the music does not fit the overall theme. That goes for Lucasarts 'Force Commander' as well. The manual has a very poor layout for a lot of information and I do find that the translation is inadequate. Last and least, the gameplay is rather boring, way too slow and frustrating. You might find this game "OK" if you're one of those patient wargamers.
I played many better games then this. Be sure to play the demo first if you still want to buy it.
