Populous: The Beginning
Page 3

A magnificent 3D-engine

Bullfrog really made a magnificent 3D-engine. Populous: The Beginning supports many 3D accelerators such as the 3DFX family, Intel i740, G200, Permedia 2 and many more.
However there are only 2 renderer devices. Software and Direct3D. It could have been better if 3DFX Glide was supported but with D3D it will also render a magnificent 3D-world.
I tried the Software renderer and I must say that it's very neat too. Even on a low-end machine the game is still highly playable even in 640x480. There are almost no slowdowns even when you rotate. However if you use many spells at the same time, the entire game could slow down enormously.
If you got a 3D card you'll be very pleased with its graphics. They are absolutely fabulous in any way.
Everything from the structures, terrain to your characters they are all highly animated and detailed. And if your followers get a bit bored they'll do some push-ups. :)

Bullfrog's own Sofware renderer. (No D3D)

Sound effects and Music

Sound and music in this game is pretty good. The games from Bullfrog have always been excellent in sound effects and music tunes and this game is absolutely no exception.
The sound effects are of very high quality and they put the game in a real good sphere.
The music that is used in this game is really superb! The music style that they used is more trance and new age that are melted together and it's a really good combination.

Control your Shaman

The best way to control your Shaman and other followers is with the mouse. Almost everything from building structures, engage battle or anything else can be done with a single click from your mouse.
Of course you'll still need your keyboard for other commands and that reference card is a perfect aid.

Battle it out on Multiplayer

This game gives you the opportunity to battle it out in a Multiplayer match.
By modem, Lan or on the Internet with a TCP/IP connection Populous: The Beginning gives you want you want.
Not much lag, even on my modem, a 28.8 the game ran very smoothly.
And you can also try out Bullfrog's own free on-line service so finding a decent server or a chap to play with shouldn't be any problem.

Conclusion

The new God sim has arrived. Bullfrog made from scratch a totally new game with a renewed 3D engine.
With lots of special spells and followers your Shaman will have to do some real work before she can enter the realm of Gods.

Populous: The Beginningis a true God Sim and it's the best ever created.
Its goal may be primitive but I'm sure that this title will keep you awake for many hours.
Bullfrog has set 'again' a new standard for God sims and they only deliver quality games ... just like this one!
It rules!
