Motorhead Page 2
19 huge missions
For the Graphical freaks, this bit of information should really interest you. Motorhead uses 3 different render devices. First there is the DI (Digital Illusions) render software device. You
can't run this baby without 3d-acceleration turned on and still find it pleasant, you might think. Well, your wrong in that aspect. It is playable and yes, there are some things that don't look smooth but thats the price you have to pay. After all, not everyone has yet a high 3D-accelerator. Those babies do cost a lot of money but I think its worth purchasing one. At this moment, there are games out that you can not play in just software mode and they require a fast 3d accelerator. For having an idea on how Motorhead: High Velocity Entertainment looks on DI's software render device (so without 3d-acceleration), look on those screenshots underneath.
The other render device is the DirectX 5 3DFX Driver. Using this driver looks more impressive then of course the sofware render. Now, 3D acceleration is turned on and you directly see the difference. Everything is much smoother. Lens flares are used a lot and there are some flying objects also, which I couldn't identify ;). Even the cars and tracks are impressive. The other render device, the last one, is ofcourse the 3DFX Glide Driver. If you want best performance and you do have a 3DFX card, oh man ... you gonna love this baby! The lens flares used
in this game are magnificent to me and they didn't bother me at all. Others may find that there are too many, some will find its just 'okay'.
Now, compare the next screenshots with those that are above. You will see the difference.
For the people that have other 3D accelerated cards, don't worry because Motorhead is enchanded with full D3D support for PowerVR™ and Riva 128 based cards.
It does feature a 3D engine that is capable of bringing 600,000+ textured polygons per second. Cars consisting of 300+ polygons each and Tracks of 15,000 - 17,000 polygons each.
I don't really know if this can be checkedbut it is stated at Gremlin Interactive and I bet those guys
never lie! :)
Sound effects and Music
The sound effects are great. From engine noises, bumps to that sound that your tires make when you are screeching over the road, it is all high quality audio. The Music tunes are very enjoyable and they do sound a bit futuristic. DI have putted a lot of work into those tunes and you can certainly hear that. No annoying or irritating sounds. Still, a minor bug is also present in Motorhead's sound menu. Normally the sound effects are always on a higher volume then the music otherwise you won't hear them right? When you lower the music drastic, lets put them on 4 and the sound effects on 8 you should hear the music as background music while the sound effects are pretty louder. Here, it stays the same. There isn't a change in music-volume, neither are the sound effects louder. Sometimes the music plays even louder then the sound effects. Strange. On the other hand, this is not a very big problem because the music is just great.
Control your Motorhead
Controlling your car in this game is as easy as peeling potatoes. I used my Microsoft Sidewinder Game Pad (that one with 8 buttons) and it plays great. Of course with a steering wheel its more fun but since I don't have such a wheel right now, I can't really put any comment on that matter.
Multiplayer
Motorhead suports lots of Multiplayer modes. First of all, Gremlin Interactive does recommend a minimum of the requirements here displayed with at least a Pentium 166Mhz or higher and a IPX
compatible network adapter for Network play. What modes does this game have? Well it has Direct Play Support, Modem support (use at least a 28.800), 2 player serial, LAN (ipx, tcp/ip) up to 8 players. It all works nice without any problems. The Multiplayer menu doesn't look very clear to me. Its confusing but once the race is starting, you just think of 1 thing ... and that is to win it!
Conclusion
This new futuristic arcade racing game from Gremlin Interactive and Digital Illusions, Motorhead: High Veloctiy Entertainment is a decent racing game that can compete against the other successful racing games. It has good graphics in DI's own sofware render mode and it has even outstanding graphics if you have an 3d accelerator. Sound is clear and the music is more techno/futurstic that suits this game. Just a little bit buggy in sound/music but not really something to worry about.
Controls are easy to manipulate and playing Motorhead in multiplayer just rocks.
If you are a big fan of futuristic game racing with lots of eye-candy, then Motorhead: High Velocity Entertainment is certainly what you need!
