Strategy and Spending

Playing Majesty successfully requires a combination of strategic selection of buildings to erect and careful spending on improvements, all while understanding how your heroes work together. If you create a wizard guild early on, your mages will be easy fodder for relatively weak monsters.
Wizards are very powerful if they can survive the early stages of the game. This means you will need to have warriors or units that can defend your mages - and mages will look to back up other classes in combat.
If you go for rangers early to explore the map, be aware of the fact that they may lure a few unwelcome guests back to your village if they choose to run from combat (as rangers typically do).
To help your heroes recover health, you can build a healer guild, or locate inns away from your village where they can rest and regain lost hit points.

  
If you want to get participate more actively in the game, you have the ability to cast personal spells, which are special spells taken from any of the guilds you've built. To cast a spell, you must have researched it (at the guild or a library), and you must have enough gold to pay for the casting.
There are over 20 personal spells to learn. In some cases, a well-placed spell can be a lot cheaper than a group of heroes, for example a single lightning bolt may take out a small horde of tough monsters where you might lose more value in heroes (and bounty) trying to defeat them with reward flags. Before you think you can win a war with personal spells, note you can only cast them in range of existing wizard guilds or towers.
Building a path of wizard towers to an enemy to be able to attack them is an art worth learning.

Graphics and Sound/Music

While the in-game music and sound effects are very good, the unique speech for each of the sixteen hero classes is also excellent, and adds a lot of character.
The graphics are very clear, colourful and battle animations are also strong.
Each of the 24+ monster types are easily distinguishable, though if you switch to the zoomed-out view things get a little fuzzy.

The normal view mode is fine though at 800x600 resolution. It's easy to find yourself just watching your heroes in action, willing them on, and it's easy to forget that you should be doing something to help your minions.
The game interface is strong, making it easy to keep track of what's happening and where, from combat alerts, to being able to track a hero or monster in a subwindow while the main view screen shows another area of the map. It's worth watching a hero or two, or a taxman, when learning the game to see how the economy works. Understanding the value of marketplaces and distant (but defendable) trading posts is important. Without gold, your kingdom will crumble.

Conclusion

Majesty really is a 'not-so-different-but-different-enough' game and you will either like it or completely hate it.
I have to admit I was bored when I first started playing as I wanted to play like I play a common RTS game (say Command & Conquer or Warcraft), but that just doesn't work.

If you give it a try you will soon discover that Majesty is really a management game at heart : deep, challenging and ultimately very rewarding.
