Heretic II Page 2
Outstanding Graphics!
Heretic 2 supports several 3D options like D3D, 3DFX Glide and OpenGL. Of course you can still play it in software mode but it isn't very pleasing. The pixels are way to big and if you don't have a very fast computer you can forget the thought that Heretic II will run super-smooth. But if you have a 3D-accelerator that is supported by Heretic II (3DFX, Nvidia, Matrox, ...) you'll see some real eye-candy. Based on the Quake II engine this game is really a masterpiece when it comes to graphical effects. The textures are extremely polished and you hardly see the lines that seperates one texture from another. I played it on 640x480 (P166 MMX, 64 SGRAM, V1) and it was super smooth! There were no slowdowns during gameplay but you must have a 100 mb swapfile available. Raven changed from the well known first person perspective to the 3rd person view and it's not annoying at all. Better then Tomb Raider and any other clones because the camera angles won't let you down. I stronly recommend that you play this game with a 3D-accelerator, if not it will be hardly playable.
Incredible Sound Effects?
The sound effects that Raven used in this sequel are incredible. If you got the right hardware, which is a 3D sound card, you can enable the A3D sound. I don't have one so I can't comment on it but I'm sure it's definitely worth its purchase. Every weapon has a different and clear sound and even the speech is of very high quality. Footsteps, people breathing, screaming ... it's all here! If your system is too slow you can also change the sound settings. Heretic II provides you with "High" or "Low" quality sounds. On our system, P166 MMX, 64 SGRAM and a V1, the game ran smooth when I used the High Quality sound setting. And I didn't experience any sound clipping.
The music tunes in this game are awesome. On some tracks you'll hear some baby screams and other creepy sounds. These tunes provide the game with a very scary atmosphere and that's just great! I love it!
Control Corvus
Your character, Corvus can be controlled by different devices at the same time. I used my 3-button Logitech Mouseman (although the middle button didn't work) and my keyboard. Left mouse button for running and right one for attacking. The mouselook is very good here and all the other controls, action-, movement-, shortcut- and weapon keys can all be accessed by your keyboard and they all can be changed at your heart's content.
Control Corvus
Of course Raven's latest masterpiece supports Multiplayer. Battle it out on a TCP/IP or LAN connection with almost no lag. However if you use a lot of spells and special effects you may notice some lag if you are not a fast server or a fast connection. It's hard to beat Half Life in multiplayer but Heretic II does a good job in providing good multiplayer support.
Conclusion
After a lot of success with their previous titles like Heretic, Hexen and Hexen II, Raven Software has done it again with Heretic II. It's not another sequel because it adds more gameplay to the game with the aid of a better plot, better graphics, magnificent weapons/spells and excellent sound effects and music tunes. And based on the powerful Quake II engine it's definitely a worthy successor to its genre. With that gothic look you'll feel yourself really hooked on this game ... for a long time.
I enjoyed it a lot and it's definitely worth the purchase. So go to your local computer shop and buy this damn fine game! -Bjorn
