Grand Theft Auto Mission Pack #1: London 1969 Page 2
Not without its Flaws
As its original, GTA London is not without his flaws. Why, for instance, can't you save during your campaigns? When you complete a campaign, the game automatically saves the game for your person, but you can't do that in the game itself. When you have to achieve 100000, 200000 and (oh god) even 300000 points, be sure it takes a lot of time. If you scored 250000 points, and for some urgent matter you have to leave your pc, say goodbye to your dear points, because there is no way to save it! Another point of criticism is the short lifetime of the game. To get 100000 points I needed one hour, to get the double I needed 2 hours and yes, for 300000 points I needed just 3 hours (which is contradictory too long for a campaign, whereby you can't save). If I don't count those 2 first hours for getting used to the game (although I played GTA before), that makes around 6 hours for a whole game. Even the fact that GTA London is an add-on, this is very short lifetime for a game. Who wants to spend his money to a game he will play for not even 10 hours?
The creators of the game claim that they have an open-end game, so after accomplishing all your missions, you can drive around, kill some people and have some fun. The open-end of the game was also in the first GTA, so that's no reason to buy GTA London.
Blocky Graphics?
The same stuff of the original. Really nothing has changed, only other cars. Now you can drive english cabs, Aston Martins, those cars which used to be driven by James Bond - in GTA London the Aston Martin cars are called James Bombs :). Minis (Mr. Bean drives one), Jaguars (Jugulars in the game) and other typical british cars. Blocky sprites even with 3dfx. The cut-scenes and info screens in particular have been given a serious period makeover. All visual aspects give a nice look to the sixties, but it is not convincing.
Sound and Music
The sound...nothing special. You hear some people talk with a cockney accent and say typical british words. In the background you hear sounds from the sixties, nicely done, but after a time it starts working on your nerves.
Conclusion
I will be honest, I've really enjoyed this first mission pack of GTA, GTA: London 1969 for a time. Grand Theft Auto is fun, no matter what criticism. Handy controls (the game can be controlled with a gamepad), fluid graphics and no demanding system specs.
However, the idea of GTA is fun, but GTA London is just more of the same. No new graphics, no new challenging game ideas, no new sound tracks...
If you're really in need to drive somewhere else than the 3 cities in the original GTA, than the London pack is meant for you. Otherwise, leave GTA London in a corner and wait for Midtown Madness or Driver.
