Global Domination Page 2
More High-Tech Weapons
Your defensive weapons are also very important. When a country launches a missile you can always defend your country or countries by firin' a defensive weapon. There are 5 different weapons available and the most common one is the 'Standard Protector'. This regular missile will take down any enemy bombers, fighters and ofcourse any incoming missiles. The 'Smart Defender' is a high explosive missile with homing capabilities and you also have a 'Sattelite Shield'. When used it will create, for a limited time an impenetrable shield around the targeted country. Any incoming missile will be destroyed.
GD also offers some 'Special Weapons' which can only be accessed if you got a 'pick up'. Pick ups orbits the globe. When someone shoots down a pick-up it automatically recovers its booty. There are several special weapons available like the Smart Bomb Destructor, Smart Bomb Jammer and more ... The most praised special weapon is the 'Doomsday Device'. No, nothing to do with the game 'Doom' but you can imagine what kind of power this weapon represents. Right, it will take out the entire planet and when playing GD, I wasn't lucky enough to obtain such a device because they are really hard to get. Every weapon has its own icon and when there are alot of different icons popping up on your screen, you can get very confused because some of them are very hard to identify. This is a big problem since you'll have to look every time into the manual to know what icon just popped on your screen. A bit irritating.
Advanced 3D Features?
Global Domination uses 'some' advanced 3D features. Nothing to be proud of. It just uses some lighting effects that are incorporated in D3D (Direct3D). If you don't have a hardware acceleration device you can still play GD in software mode. The software version of this game is really bad ... too many pixels and if you zoom in on the globe it gets very confusing to see where you're located. But it's playable.
I played the game using my Monster 3D (4mb) and on my P166 MMX with 64Mb Ram, Global Domination ran flawlessly. I didn't noticed any slowdowns at all. Great, if this game would be fun to play... but it isn't.
More of the same
Controlling your country is basically 100% done with your mouse. All you have to do is mouse-clickin'. Left click to attack and right click to defend. How hard can it be? Remember that game called Virtual Valerie 2 where clicking was the only thing you had to do if you wanted some action? Well, this Psygnosis game, Global Domination isn't very different than VV2. Well, there aren't sex scenes involved here but you just need a very good mouse. Fortunately for me, I do have a very good mouse which is the Logitech Mouseman but my third mouse button refuse to work in games. Anyway, there are still some functions that you must access with your keyboard but most of the time you'll play the game with your mouse.
Music is good, unfortunately that is the only 'good' thing. Sound effects are bland and it does get a bit repetitive after a while. Most of the time you will hear the sound of launching- and defending missiles. Other then those effects ... it doesn't get sweeter.
Multiplayer Nuke
Global Domination has all the standard Multiplayer options and it also supports TCP/IP. IPX/TCP offers a maximum of 16 players. I really don't see the fun of going into multiplayer with this game because, and I have said it before, all you have to do is just click here and click there. That's about it! And that's bascially why I didn't test the Multiplayer mode because when I'm falling asleep it's very hard to wake me again and I personally don't think that my boss will love me coming late to work, right?
Conclusion
Well, Global Domination from Psygnosis is indeed a very weird game. The idea behind the whole thing is pretty original but it just wasn't good enough to keep me playing. In other words, it gets a bit repetitive after a while and ... you could fall asleep. Still, the music is excellent but that's about it. I wasn't very pleased with its graphics nor with its gameplay. The only thing that is good about this title is its different weapons, only 300kb to install and its FMV.
Global Domination could have been a really cool game but Psygnosis definitely make a mistake by releasing this game.
It's good for 20 minutes ... after that ... give it to a friend as a birthday present (you'll be happy but he won't :-))
