Get Medieval Page 2
Meet your Heroes
Ok, now I arrived at the Main screen, ready to kill some baddies. In Get Medieval, you can choose what kind of local game you want to play. The Dragon Guest, Random dungeon or custom dungeon. The DG is actually the game with its story. You need to retake the castle from Daramil (the red dragon) and her evil minions. If you want to succeed in your kill-everyone quest you will need to grap 1 of the 4 heroes of this game. Basically, they are the same heroes as in Gaunlet. Each character has its own well-balanced strengths and weaknesses.
There is the elf Eryc. This little archer, which is accidently dressed in green and shoots green arrows, is one of the fastest in foot and weapon speed but lacks enormously in weapon strength. If you want a Robin Hood with a foot speed that can compete the Olympics 100 metre and a weapon speed that goes so fast as the maximum speed of your car then Eryc is your man to kill the baddies as fast you want.
But there is also the strong Zared. He's a real barbarian and correct me if I'm wrong but his voice reminded me of some famous actor. Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger. That Austria guy. Believe it or not but when I heard his oneliners (from Zared not Arnolds :-)) I just thought it was Schwarzenegger. It's probably not him but the guy that is responsable for Zareds voice might just look like Arnold because he certainly speaks like him ;-). No offence Monolith chap. It's perhaps a compliment, who knows. He, Zared, is the best when it comes to weapon strength but he's so slow that when he runs, your 101 year old grandmother could easily run him over. Weapon speed is also slow but very strong. One hit from his steel axe is enough to kill a strong evil minion.
For any female gamers or male gamers that rather want to play with a gorgeous female then a man (Hey, my first GM game was also with a female ... god knows!), Monolith has included 2 female characters, a sorceress called Levina and the avenger Kellina. Levina and Kellina. Maybe sisters? They have pretty much the same strengths and weaknesses. The only difference between them is their weapons. Lev which is a good sorceress uses a stick that shoots blue fireballs. Its magical and don't underestimate her because she knows how to battle. On the other hand we have Kel, an anvenger with a very big and sharp sword.
If you don't want to play the Dragon Quest and rather want to kill for just a few minuts, you better choose the Random Dungeon or the Custom Dungeon where you load a custom level using the GM editor which I shall talk about later.
What kind of other things does the game offer?
GM has about 40 action levels which are all pretty big and nice colored. Like I already mentioned you can choose 1 from the 4 heroes but it also has 20 different ennemies and bosses like a giant spider, zombies, bats, etc. They are all quite nice 3d rendered and are pretty good animated. There are also 8 different power ups that gives your character special abilities and you can pick up several other objects that improves for example your weapon strength or health. When playing Get Medieval you will notice that it is based on a top down view on your character. It gives you a good overview but its a pity that a map view isn't included. The walls and other building structures are all 3d rendered and they are looking good without using a 3d-accelerated card.
Monolith has also included a GM editor. They already done that with Claw and now with Get Medieval. This adds a good reply value to the game because you can create your own levels and never be bored with playing the same levels over and over again. Other people will create their own levels as well and it won't take long before you can download those from the Internet. Then grab them and put them in your custom dir, load the game and choose custom dungeon. A pretty nice idea from the chaps at Monolith!
Creepy sounds and those good old music tracks. That is exactly what GM offers. Every enemy and other object has it own sound. Each level has also its own music track which is quite enjoyable. Not the action packed music that is found in other action games but this is a remake of the classic Gauntlet so what did you expect? Techno?
Controlling your character in this game from Monolith is very very easy. They recommend a gamepad or joystick and I played it with my Sidewinder. It worked without any problems and all your buttons can be customized. In fact, you don't need a 10-button gamepad because Get Medieval just uses 3 main buttons.
The Multiplay Experience
GM also offers Multiplay. You can either play on the Internet, Lan or via a modem. Beware because when you want to play GM on the Internet there might occur some problems. I have heard that some things don't work as they should work. If you have any problems while playing GM on the Net, you better check out the GM forum which can be found on their official homepage: www.getmedieval.com. Lan and modem play is probably GM's best feature because it's always much cooler when you play against a friend or 2 or 3.
Conclusion
With Get Medieval, Monolith did a pretty good job in re-creating the old classic game Gauntlet. This game has nice effects, same good gameplay and will not bore you because after the 40 big levels there is always the random dungeon option and you can always download a custom dungeon level that you can upload into the game. If you are a very creative gameer then you can also make your own GM levels using the GM editor.
The arcade classic, Gauntlet is back with new designs, creepy sounds and great gameplay. If you ever played Gauntlet then Get Medieval should be yours. Get it from your store NOW!
