Fallout 2 A post nuclear Role Playing Game Page 3
Outstanding Graphics!
The graphics in Fallout 2 are outstanding! It has a very nice feel when you play it and you immediately feel 'at home'. However, the graphics are a bit gritty and you can't set the resolution higher than 1024x768 or use a full 16-bit pallete. Still, I don't know how the graphics looked in Fallout 1 but here they are extremely well detailed and sometimes gorgeous to look at. Of course in almost any RPG there isn't any support for 3D hardware acceleration. But watch out for those upcoming RPG's that will have 3D acceleration. Fallout 2 doens't support any 3D hardware and there are no 3D environments or objects whatsoever because the entire world you play in is 2D. You just have to get used to the idea that you are now playing a title without any 3D acceleration. But I really didn't mind. The engine (same as in Fallout 1) might be a bit dated but for now, it can compete with other fine RGP's. The levels are great and big ... very big. This game will keep you busy for weeks and weeks. The scenery in this game is extremely well done and the post-nuclear feel that you get when you travel through the wastelands is exceptional good.
The animations of the several people and enemies are very well done and even the lip synchronisation is excellent. The speech is of high quality and therefore it is just brilliant. The several sound effects are good but that's about it. Most of the monsters won't make a sound at all. The other in-game sound effects are really nothing special to make any fuss about it but they aren't bad either.
An absolute stunning sound track
But ... the musical score in this game is absolutely stunning! I was quite surprised the first time I heard a track and many levels later, they continue to amaze me. Excellent! I heard that the musical score in Fallout 1 was also very good but I certainly think that this sequel has improved, in any matter.
The interface that they used in this Fallout sequel is very easy to use but it doesn't deliver anything new. Ok, moving your character can be entirely done with your mouse, so are the attack/open commands. True, you still need your keyboard for some commands but gladly the in-game interface will provide you with the most common actions. Combat, targeting, moving, ... you can get all that with a single mouse click. It's easy but it's a bit dated though. Perhaps some creativity and style would give the interface new life but hey, you just can't replace it so you gotto stick with what you have. Still, it isn't a bad one but like I said before ... we love originality.
Any Multiplayer?
If you were thinking on hosting or playing a Fallout 2 multiplayer game with a few friends ... think again because there isn't any support. No, this title doesn't support TCP/IP, modem, LAN or anything else. But I don't really think that this game should support it. Fallout 2 doesn't need multiplayer because there aren't any other companions like for example in Baldur's Gate. The single player game is excellent and if you really want some multiplayer then go with Baldur's Gate. From what I've heard it has excellent multiplayer support.
Conclusion
Well well, Interplay has managed to deliver us 'again' a wonderful Role Playing Game with this sequel, Fallout 2 The graphics are simply amazing but they are a bit gritty. However I really didn't mind that grittiness ... it adds a more post-nuclear feeling towards the game. There isn't any support for 3D Hardware acceleration but that's absolutely not necessary. The musical score and sound effects are good to compete with other RPGs and the speech ... oh I loved that speech ... grandiose. Don't search for that Multiplayer option because Fallout 2 doesn't support that either. Still, I really don't think that this game needs it.
Fallout 2: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game is just a wonderful single player RPG and if you're fond of role playing games then this game is certainly what YOU need. Now, move your ass and go buy yourself a copy!
