Dethkarz Page 2
Graphical Detail
The developers of Dethkarz, the australian Melbourne House, did a great job with their graphical knowledge, but the results are demanding for your PC system. To run the game smoothly on the greatest resolution with all detail enabled, you sure will need a PII 300 mhz. Of course, weaker systems can also handle Dethkarz easily, but you will have to reduce the resolution or the detail. On a P200 MMX with a 3D acceleration card the game really ran fast and smooth on 640x480 and 800x600 (less detail though). As said, the graphics are really cool. You will be blinded by gaudy shinings, flare-lensing, realistic tiretracks, colored lighting, nice colors... This game has it all.
Minor points in Gameplay?
Like every game that's good but not that excellent (a super-sub), Dethkarz has a few failings. First point: you can't save during a season championship. You must race the four tracks directly after each other. Between two tracks you only see the results and the current standing of the championship. Not one button to save or to load. You can quit, though. If you know you have to score 32 points to go further in a level, one weak race can destroy your chances on a further level. For example, you've won the first race and you want to save your game, because in that way if you fail on another track, you don't have to re-race that track. No, no can do! You have to achieve a constantly high level in your races to score the needed points. And make sure they don't fry your ass ('cause you will regret it).
A common known problem in many race games is the sound. Too little attention is paid to this subject, although producers do know that sound (effects) is (are) important to create a right atmosphere. Melbourne House has simply recorded some ehm insect sounds and smashed them in the game. (I don't know if they actually did that but it wouldn't surprise me :) ).
Last (but not least): the design of the tracks. First of all, all races take place on the same 4 tracks (there are only 4 environments -remember) Of course, the more difficult a level is, the longer the track will be. But basically, you will always race on the same tracks. The designers haven't been creative while designing the circuits. 'We'll put a corner here, and oh yeah, there, oh and there a very severe one, yeah that's it!' Aargh! Very frustrating! Some vehicles are hard to control and imagine that when you're racing at top speed and you have to take some very stupid placed corners ... well, you probably know what will happen.
Conclusion
Dethkarz from Melbourne race isn't perfect. Hell, what game is? Ok, Half Life is pretty perfect. However, if you're looking to the plus points that this game has to offer, is it definitly one you should go for.
After all, Detkarz is fun, fun and fun! It is killing, racing, laughing, and a lot of other things. Feel free to jump in the futuristic 3D combat racing world of Dethkarz! This game is absolutely perfect to play while you're on coffee-break, to move your brains to Dethkarz world! I hadn't heard of Melbourne House before, but from now on, I'll keep an eye on those guys!
