Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun Page 2
Danger ... higly Addictive!
Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun as its predecessors is still highly addictive, Command and Conquer fans will immediately love the looks and feel of this game. There’s a new option in the interface for setting waypoints which really comes in handy for protecting your base(s). The units will follow all waypoints and once attacked will start firing on the enemy units.
New units were added and even a new fraction named The Forgotten, these are units mutated by Tiberium. There are also some alien units which may hinder or help you when you play a campaign, I remember 1 mission where a NOD soldier started to shoot at, which looked to me as a sheep, an alien. Nature lover as I am, I started to advance on the NOD unit but as soon as I got in range one of my units said that those sheep didn’t look friendly. Sadly I was already too close as 1 of my units started to shoot at the sheep. Well the sheep turned out to be one bad bitch and nearly killed my whole squad, had to restart that mission.
Other nice graphics additions are the Colored Lighting effect and the flying debris once you destroyed a unit or building. The Day and Night effects are also very funny, your units field of vision is reduced at night, and here the searchlights are really shining. The explosions are also better looking than the former C&C games and they can affect the create craters in the terrain.
Speaking of the terrain, there are places that are covered with ice that may cost you some heavy units since they’ll crack the ice and drop into the water. In time the ice will be ‘rebuild’.
Only 800x600 max?
The units still look very bland, they’re made out of voxels which gives them a bit of a 3 dimensional look, so I used a hack I found to run the game in 1024 * 768 this will of course make the units smaller but I get a bigger picture of the battlefield. The highest resolution you can select in the game itself is 800 * 600. One nice touch is that some units seem to have survived the blast that occurred in Tiberian Dawn, you’ll see in one of the latest missions. There are more units per side now and some can cross water where others can go underground! The units also earn experience if they defeat an enemy unit making them tougher and more powerfull.
Multiplayer ready
The multi-player part in Tiberian Sun also has had a few extras, one very nice feature in skirmish mode is the ‘surprise me’ button which will create a random map. The Nod ability to clock their base is also very handy when playing against human opponents. We’ve played it over a LAN with a Pentium 200 as one of 3 others and the game really bogged down. It also has an option to play it over the internet using Westwood studios online servers.
The music in Tiberian Sun really adds to the game were the NOD music stands out. Nothing really spectacular but it gives you a feeling you’re playing a C&C game which of course is exactly what you’re doing.
Conclusion
The latest RTS game from Westwood Studios, Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun isn't really offering someting new, except for more colored lighting and voxels but again, Westwood has made a damn fine enjoyable Real Time Strategy game. Tiberian Sun will again be one of this years hottest games and it will definitely stay in the top-charts for a long time.
It's addictive and multiplayer is a joy to play on Westwood servers. There might be some lag, especially if you are on a slow connection but that doesn't make the fun go away.
Tiberian Sun might not be the best innovative RTS game of '99 but it's very very close.
