Maxi Sound Fortissimo
Page 3

Software bundle

To end this 3 page review of Guillemot's new sound card, the Maxi Sound Fortissimo I would like to mention something about the included "Software Bundle".

The first products that are included with the installation disc are the Media Station and the Yamaha XG Studio.
Media Station (see picture below) is in fact a 'multi-function graphical stereo interface' that has a mixing panel, a recorder, wave file player, cd player and MIDI player. You can call it, a 5-in-1 audio application.

Media Station program, 5-in-1

With Media Station you can have access to every audio source, from playing CD's to opening WAV files on your HD, or playing MIDI files, record an audio source or use the Equalizer.

The other program is caled Yamaha XG Studio. This little program, created by Yamaha of course is a 'MIDI' player and arranger. Really useful if you are into MIDI files and want to arrange your own ... otherwise don't install it all.

The other disc that was included in the package was the program Acid DJ.
Acid Dj, which was made by the company 'Sonic Foundry' is a program that will allow you to mix different musical tracks and to create your own beats. (see small picture below)

Acid DJ, make your own beats (no large pic available)

You can also record new sounds (= samples) and integrate them into existing songs.
However, since I'm not really specialized into 'making my own beats', I didn't try it out that much but for the musicians or the people that are interested in making their own music ... this program is a very nice addition.

Final Words

So, you might wonder how much this card really costs? Because of the support of several 3D Audio API's you might think that Guillemot's Fortissimo sound card is the most expensive one that you can buy?
Think again, the sound card is only priced at 2900 Belgian Francs which is around 93$.
For Europeans, like myself, this is the cheapest sound card with the most feature set that I have ever seen.

So, Hardware manufacturer Guillemot has surprised me again with their new sound card, the Maxi Sound Fortissimo.
This sound card has the ability to decode several 3D sound formats (API) such as EAX, A3D 1.0, DirectMusic and DirectSound. All this at a really surprising cheap price.
It also has an excellent sound quality.
The playback of Music and Sound Effects could not been better and the sound card has several ports, 4 speaker support and a S/PDIF Digital output with optical connector is included as well.

-Bjorn

What's Good
  • Excellent Price/Performance Ratio
  • Many in- and output ports with 4 speaker support
  • S/PDIF Digital output with optical connector (optical cable not supplied)
  • Supports several 3D Audio Formats (EAX, A3D 1.0, DirectMusic and -Sound)
  • Excellent Sound Quality
What's Bad
  • Software bundle is not bad but could be better
  • Installation manual could be better
Overall Rating: 8.8/10
