Colin McRae Rally 2.0
Page 2

Gameplay (continue)

Rally's aren't driven anymore on "tracks", but between a starting point and an ending point, which lie apart from each other.
This is called a "stage". Each stage is divided into a certain amount of blocks, ending with a time point where your current time is compared with the times of the other drivers.
You instantly get an overview of how much you're up front or behind.

While driving, your car can get seriously damaged. There's time to repair your vehicle after each block of two stages. What's really great are the damage effects on the outside of the car such as cracked or broken windows, lights malfunctioning, even the bumper can be hanging from your car while you are dragging it along over the road.
The front window of the car seems to be made of some unbreakable material. Although it may seem as if the front window is cracked or broken from the outside, you always see a clean window when driving in the cockpit ... strange.

Several Rally Modes

The 'Arcade' option takes you on a series of tracks. You can decide how many opponents you will face and how many laps you wish to drive. I really recommend the Rally part of the game, with its very unique variety of stages, and places.

The 'Challenge' option lets you compete in a series of duels in a cup scheme. If you lose, you're out.

'Time Attack' is for those who like to set a record because CMR2 has driver profiles. For each profile the best personal time is kept for a circuit and the circuit record is also kept.
Nice to know and a nice challenge too.

Although the game is 'done', it also has some annoying things in it. I really hated those little trees on the side of the road, especially in the Finland-rally. They are tiny, but if you drive in on one of them they won't budge.

The replays, which are generally very exciting to watch, were sometimes 'out of sync' in two-player mode.
You could see that the game had saved the path in which I drove, but that it was replayed in a wrong way, resulting in a different replay than the race I drove. A little bug which is already fixed if you download and install the latest patch.

Sound & Music

The sound of the car is not at all annoying, and there are cool effects when you hit a tree or even when you slide on gravel.
The volume of the commentator's voice was a little too soft at first, so I cranked it up a little. I've learned that listening to that voice can really make a huge difference.
There's no music while driving in the rally-mode, but in the arcade-mode there's cool music playing, not the kind you'd listen to all day, but real great drive-music.

Multiplayer

The networking part of the game is all right, it worked fine when I tried to race a friend on the internet.
CMR2 has also support for IPX.

Conclusion

I was pleasantly surprised that this long awaited game from 'Codemasters', namely Colin McRae Rally 2.0 turned out this good.
It really justifies the long production time. My driving style will never be the same -- just as long as I don't hit those damn trees! :)

In other words, right now this game is again the best Rally game that your money can buy!
