For Pro's only!

'Microsoft' seems to be moving more and more into the game industry with the release of a handful of good games like 'Crimson Skies', 'Metal Gear Solid', 'Midtown Madness', 'Starlancer' etc.

And more are yet to come ! There has been a time that Microsoft concentrated more on the gaming hardware and with the introduction of the original SideWinder Game Pad in the beginning of the nineties they have created a product range that since then has been expanded with racing wheels, force feedback and motion sensing technology and of course better and lighter devices to assist the avid gameplayer in attaining the ultimate gaming experience.

The Sidewinder Gamepad PRO in all its glory

One of their gamepads I have been playing around lately is their "SideWinder Gamepad PRO", a mid-priced gamepad for the USB-format on the PC.
Lets have a closer look what it has to offer.

What's in the BOX?

In the retail box we find the gamepad, a manual and the usual Microsoft License Agreement.
This is a USB - only device and Microsoft has gone to great length to make it clear : no less than 5 'USB Required'- warnings are on the box. You will also need Windows 98 for this one, but I expect anyone will have this by now.

The manual is nothing more than a getting-started explaining how to connect the device and install the supplied software.
However this shouldn't be a problem as the USB standard is Plug-and-Play and should get you in business in a matter of seconds. Just make sure you have the Windows installation CD at hand as some drivers will be required for the gamepad to work.

Key Features?

Before we take a closer look to the gamepad itself I'll give you a more detailed look at its 'key-features':
  • Proportional and digital control in one d-pad.
  • Multiple customizable buttons. Six action buttons, two triggers and one shift button allow gamers to customize up to 16 programmable buttons.
  • Extreme durability. The SideWinder Game Pad Pro is an extremely durable device ready for battle in the toughest of gaming arenas.
  • Comfortable gameplay. Sound ergonomic design enables gamers to play comfortably.
  • Includes SideWinder game controller software.
  • USB compatibility. Using USB takes advantage of the latest operating system functionality for easy installation and setup.
On the next page, we will take a closer look on the SideWinder Game Pad Pro itself.
